The Last Command: Leia’s Flame Vest

The Heir To The Empire or Thrawn Trilogy was turned into a comic adaptation in the 1990’s. In the The Last Command, the 3rd part of that comic adaptation, Leia appears in a vest outfit very similar to her Bespin outfit from The Empire Strikes Back. I’m naming this outfit from the comics Leia’s Flame Vest outfit, because it has similarities to both Leia’s Bespin vest outfit and that coloration of Padme’s Flame handmaiden outfit from The Phantom Menace.

Translating Cartoon To Reality:

When translating an outfit from drawn image to reality it is important to look at it as not a direct translation. A direct copy will end up looking cartnoonish, and if that is not the intention for the outfit then it will not have the desired effect. Keeping an eye towards proportion will help avoid a cartoonish look, however, this also requires interpretation about proportions comic characters are not proportional to real humans. That said the comic still provides good guide lines for how the end product should turn out.

It is also important to note that when a outfit is being rendered in the drawn medium that both highlights and low lights are used to give definition to the character. (Especially in clothing that is black in color, since it would be very hard to show any kind of definition in black colored cloths without them.) However, these high and low lights are not meant to represent the kind of fabric the outfit is made out of.

When translating an outfit decisions about where seems go, and specific details have to be made without much help from the source images as often they are not a detail that is shown. However, with this particular outfit, since it is so close in design to Leia’s Bespin Vest outfit using the details from that outfit for Leia’s Flame Vest would work well.

Fabric:

The Bespin outfit the Leia wears in TESB is made out of Crepe de Chine silk, it seems likely that this outfit too would be made out of a similar fabric. Avoiding shiny fabrics is a good idea, shiny fabrics are rarely used in Star Wars.

Vest:

Vest Collar & Yoke:

TLC3 Vest Collar 2

(TLC: Leia’s Flame Vest: Collar Is Red)

Similarity to Leia’s Bespin vest, the collar on Leia’s Flame Vest is a semi Mandarin collar, it seems to be fairly blunt in some of the pictures, however, the more detailed pictures suggest that the collar has a slight curing at the very ends. Leia’s vest collar dose not come up past her jaw, instead stopped half way up her neck, similar in proportion to Leia’s Bespin vest collar. The collar on Leia’s Flame Vest is a deep red color.

(TESB: Bespin Leia Vest Collar & Yoke)

The Yoke of Leia’s Flame Vest is burnt sunset yellow, the the yoke is similar is proportion and construction to Leia’s Bespin Vest. The soft diamond shape appears in the front and back of  the yoke on Leia’s vest is the same in both Leia’s Flame and Bespin Vests.

TLC1 Vest Level With Belt

Vest Body:

The body of the Flame Vest is deep red, and the construction appears like the Bespin vest. The red fabric is pleated or gathered which allows for a fuller skirt to the vest, see the pink arrows for the gathering. It’s likely pleated like the Bespin vest.

TLC1 Vest Pleets

The arm howl for the vest ends roughly around the top of the elbow, the arm opening appears to be oval or circular. Like with Leia’s Bespin Vest, the vest likely falls to around Leia’s ankles.

Dress:

The Color of the dress Leia wears under the Flame Vest seems to be char coal grey

Neck:

TLC2 Boat Neck Black DressThe neckline for the dress that Leia wears with the Flame Vest has a boat neckline,

Sleeves:

TLC3 Sleeve LengthThe sleeves of the dress are strait sleeves, with a cropped length, they are longer then 3/4, however, they are not full length sleeves.

Dress Body:

TLC3 Pleeted SkirtThe skirt of Leia’s dress is sleeted or gathered, the dress falls most likely to her ankles, the dress also appears to have an A line or slightly wide skirt. It appears that Leia is wearing a fabric covered leather diamond shaped belt similar to her Bespin belt. However, it also appears that the waistline for this dress is a V shape where the gathered skirt it attacked, the bodice appearing to be fitted similarly to the Bespin tunic.

TLC5 Belt or Bodice

Hair:

Leia’s hairstyle that she wears with her flame vest is simple, and almost a combination between Hoth Leia hair and Bespin Leia hair. her hair has no part and instead is pulled back, a crown braid runs over the top of her head and the rest of her hair is left to hand down in a soft looping bubble that just touches her shoulders.

TLC2 No Part HairTLC3 Hair Shoulder LengthTLC2 Side Coyals Hair

Inspirations & Similarities:

Clearly Leia’s Flame Vest is inspired by Leia’s Bespin outfit, however, there are also some similarities to some of Padmé’s costumes that are featured in the prequels. These comics came out before the Prequel Trilogy so the similarities to this outfit from the Prequel’s outfits is more coincidental. However, it also attests to the fact that the artist had an eye for what would be appropriate for Star Wars fashion.

Leia Hair Inspiration 3

The Hairstyles that Leia wears with her Flame Vest Outfit, has a similar back to the lower half of Padmé’s Purple Senate Outfit from ROTS. The looped over bottom part of the hairstyle has a similar shape and volume.

Flame Vets Inpiration
(TPM: Padmé Flame Handmaiden)

The similarity in color patterns between the flame handmaiden outfit from TPM and Leia’s Vest is why I’ve named it Leia’s Flame Vest. The deep red color of the body of the vest is similar to that of the under-sleeves sleeves and hip sash on the flame handmaiden outfit. the yellow skirt of the flame handmaiden outfit also is similare in color to Leia’s flame vest, through in this picture the yellow is a darker shade on Leia’s vest then the skirt of the TPM dress.

Leia’s Flame Vest, is very similar to the Bespin Vest she wears in The Empire Strikes Back. The collar and yoke are similar in construction, as well as shape and proportion.

Legends EU: Heir To The Empire & Dark Force Rising: Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest

The Heir To The Empire, or Thrawn Trilogy was turned into a comic adaptation in the 1990’s. In both the 1st part Heir to the Empire and the 2nd part Dark Force Rising, Leia wears a yellow vest and black shirt and pants combination. She notibly wears this outfit when visiting the Bimm’s on Bimmisaari (who notably wear yellow as part of their culture). Thus it has been named the Yellow Bimm Vest, because of this reference to Bimm’s in Heir to the Empire book.

DFR Cover
(HTTE & DFR: Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest)

Inspirations:

Looking at Luke’s Black Vest outfits that he wears in the beginning of Return of the Jedi while at Jabba’s palace is would seem that his outfit is the inspiration for Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest in the comic. The comics where drawn by three different artists, and the artists for part 1 had a very different style of art then the 2nd parts. Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest is the most strongly similar to Luke’s black Vest outfit from ROTJ, in the first Volume Heir To The Empire. (Note: that they fist volume does not have consistent representation of the costume). For the purposes of this break down most of the images will be from volume 2 Dark Force Rising as they are more consistent in their depiction and simpler to breakdown.

Padme Vest Sleeves Inperation Leia
(TPM & DFR: Similar Arm Howls)

Though The Phantome Menace did not come out until after the comics where released, however, there is some similarities in the width and shape of the arms howls of Padmé’s Pilot Disguise Vest, as well as the depth of the fabric that sits on the should.

Comic & Breakdown Design:

Because the comics had three different artists, Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest goes through several variations in look. For the purposes of consistency this post is choosing to base the breakdown (for the most part) on the Dark Force Rising comics, which are the most consistently represented and detailed of the three comics for this outfit. This is why the look of the outfit changes from comic to comic and also why the outfit in the Heir To The Empire comics look more similar to Luke’s Black Taber Vest from Return Of The Jedi. Also why Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest in Dark Force Rising looks more similar to Padmé’s Pilot Disguise Vest from The Phantom Menace.

Fit:

(Note: that Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest is fitted but not skin tight, there is enough slack in the fabric to show that it’s comfortably loose while still smooth.)

Vest Sleeves:

DFR3 Double Sleeve Fold 2
(DFR: Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest: Double Folded Sleeve)

Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest has folded double sleeve, the sleeve appears to be one large piece that then has part of it folded or tucked under  to create the double sleeve. Similar to (but not exactly like) how Obi-Wan’s Jedi tunic sleeves are tucked up.

HTTE1 Double Sleeve 3
(HTTE: Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest: Double Sleeve)
DFR3 Double Sleeve Seem 2
(DFR: Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest: Shoulder Seem)

There is a strait seem that runs along Leia’s shoulder, for construction of this vest side seems are likely.

DFR14 Sleeve Opening Shape
(DFR: Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest: Arm ‘V’ Shaped Howl)

The arm howl for Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest is a inverted teardrop in the picture which translates to ‘V’ shaped arm howl opening. The arm howl is a deep one that goes all the way down to fall roughly in line with under Leia’s bust. And though it can not be seen in this picture falls roughly in line with the point of the deep V neck of the vest.

Vest Neck:

Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest has a deep ‘V’ neckline, the ‘V’ neck width is not much wider the Leia’s neck.

DFR Vest Neck Bust
(Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest: Deep V Neck, Depth Goes Down To Under Leia’s Bust)

The deep ‘V’ neckline of Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest goes down to just under her bust line where the point ends.

Vest Body:

The length of the Yellow Bimm Vest comes down to tunic length, the vests lower hem ends roughly around the point where Leia’s leg meets her hip.

DFR Side Seem Vest
(DFR: Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest: Side Seem)

There is a side seem on Leia’s Vest, likely a slightly curved seem to allow for her pregnancy. Though it’s hard to tell, for the construction of the yellow vest a back seem with an invisible zipper seems likely.

DFR3 Center Back Seem
(DFR: Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest: Back Seem)

Shirt:

DFR1 Turtel Neck
(DFR: Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest: Turtle Neck)

The shirt that Leia wears under her Yellow Vest is a black turtle neck, (it, however, does not have a folded over collar so it’s similar to a mock turtle neck , however, it comes up higher more to the height of an actual turtle neck.) The shirt seems to be a fitted shirt as there is no bulk viable under the Yellow vest, and likely make out of the same fabric as the pants.

Sleeve Shirt Leia
(DFR: Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest :Undershirt Sleeves)

The sleeves of the undershirt that Leia wears are tight fitting and break at the wrist, sometimes Leia wears gloves of the same color with this shirt that over lap the sleeves, leaving no skin visible.

Pants:

DFR Pants
(DFR: Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest: Pants)

The pants Leia wears with her Yellow Vest, are close fitting pants of the same black color as the shirt. Likely made out of the same fabric as the shirt, because of the close fitting of the pants a fabric with some stretch would be a good idea.

Boots:

DFR15 Leia Boots
(DFR: Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest: Boots)

The boots that Leia wears with her Yellow Bimm Vest outfit, the boots are standard simple black riding boots. They appear to be unadorned and go up to the knee.

Hairstyle & Hair Piece:

Leia’s hairstyle is a simple three strand or English braid, the braids ends roughly mid back or at the bottom of the shoulder blades. The hairpiece that Leia wears is inconstantly represented, however, the most common way in which it appears in two separate combs similar in idea to the way that Slave Leia’s hair pieces appear.

(Dark Force Rising: Leia’s Yellow Bimm Vest: Hair Piece)

The Hair piece is two separate pieces that attach on ether side of the head with two distinctive curling decorative parts both above and by the ears. The first curl comes down near where the sideburns are, there is a second scowling piece at the very stop of the hair piece. There also appears to be three lobs to the hair piece, ranging from large to small descending in size as they go back away from her ear.

Attack Of The Clones: Padmé’s Fireside/Black Corset/Dinner Gown Hairstyle

In Attack of the clones, Padmé wears a black corseted dress for dinner with Anakin and then after by the fireside. With this dress Padmé’s hair is done in a elegant but fairly simple style. Like with all Star Wars hairstyles this one will require some hairpieces, to make the twisted coils that wrap around the braid. (See Myths about Star Wars Hairstyles)

Prequel Trilogy: Padmé Curls

Padmé has many hair styles thrghout the Prequel Trilogy, often when Padmé’s hair isn’t in an official style she wears it hair in curls. Padmé’s curls are usually medium to small size curls that fall in soft romantic rings, it is also important to note that Padmé also has different kinds of curl patterns depending on the outfit. Studying reference images helps to get an idea of what kind of curl patterns are needed. Like with all costuming, study the reference images for proportion, and adjust to fit your own unique features from there is one of the best places to start.

How To Curl Hair:

There are a lot of different method to curling hair, the main two being heat and heartless curls. If you have naturally curly hair you may want to change your curl pattern, (the natural way your hair curls,) to one more similar to Padmé.

Helpful Tips:

Before curling your hair some tips that can help, use a product in your hair such as, moose, curling serum, or hair spray. Also consider using hairspray on the curls after the curls are finished forming.

When curling hair, wrap the curl on the wand or the roller in the opposite direction every other curl, (curl 1 away from the face, curl 2 towards the face ext.) This helps prevent the curls from tangling together and helps keep them more defined as separate curls.

When using a heat tool using a heat protective product can help keep the heat tool from damaging your hair.

The Empire Strikes Back: Bespin/Cloud City: Leia Hairstyle

Breakdown:

Leia’s Bespin hair consists of a bun with two looped braids tucked underneath the bun, this hair style is most likely achieve with the addition of hair pieces and or hair extensions. This style is not hard to do, however, most tutorials don’t have the right preparations, even if they have good technique, to get the right volume and length most people will need to use synthetic extensions.

Bun:

Leia’s hair does not have a part of any kind; it is smoothed back into the style,

Version – 1:

Follow the steps in the video links, (Note: that this tutorial needs tweaking to be movie accurate.) Put your own hair into a ponytail on the crown of your head, if your hair is long enough leave it out to make the bun, if not then make sure to add in some synthetic hair to make the bun large enough.

Take synthetic pre-braided hair in a long enough length to loop down to the top of the shoulders. Pin this hair on the top of the ponytail, and loop the braids as shown in the video, however, make sure to loop them down to the top of the shoulders. (Also: make sure that the braids on hanging down from the sides, this is easy to achieve by pinning on the top of the ponytail, there should be several inches between the loops.) Hid the ends under the bun, make sure to wrap the bun following the pattern in the above picture with numbers. Make sure to position the bun in line with the top of the eyebrows and the head, also make sure that the bun is not too big. Finish the look with a hair net.

(Note: this video link has a bun that is note wrapped the right way and is too big, it also has loops that are too short and the braids need to be a little wider, it also leaves out the ear curls. However, the technique is good for achieving a movie accurate hair style.)

Version – 2:

Wigs:

If you are using a wig you may not need to add in any extra hair, follow the steps above with your wig hair to achieve the right look.

Version – 3:

Hair Pieces:

Like with End Ceremony Leia, you could make a hair piece that you pin on over your own hair, make sure to follow the proportions indicated in the pictures. If you have long enough hair you can add a little synthetic hair into your own to make the right width and use your own hair to make the loops and use a clip in or pin on bun (See Links.)

A New Hope: Leia’s End Ceremony Hairstyle

Leia’s end ceremony hair is rather simple and can be achieved in several different ways to get a movie accurate look.

Breakdown:

Leia’s hair is pulled back into a high ponytail on the crown of her head, the tail is braided in a three strand or English braid. The tail of the braid that hangs down Leia’s back should have at least 6” to 12” inches left un-braided.

Leia End Hair 1
(ANH: End Ceremony Leia Hair: Braid Length)
Leia End Hair 5
(ANH: End Ceremony Leia Hair: Three Strand Braid)

The bun has three English braids wrapped around the outside, the bun is very large, the bottom edge towards the back of the head starts around the top of Leia’s ears.

Leia End Hair 3
(ANH: End Ceremony Leia Hair: Three Braids Wrapped Around the Bun)
Leia End Hair 2
(ANH: End Ceremony Leia Hair: Bottom Edge of Bun Starts at Ears)

the height of the bun is roughly 5” inches, measuring from the crown of the head to the top of the ears is about the same height as the bun. Play around with it to see what looks best for each individual Leia, in some cases this measurement may exceed 5″ inches, but it is advised to keep the height of the bun 5″ inches or under. The Bun is also clearly viable over the top of Leia’s head and the width of the bun does not go past the edge of Leia’s head, and infarct is smaller then the width of Leai’s head.

Leia End Hair 4
(ANH: End Ceremony Leia Hair: Height and Width of the Bun)
end leia hari 6
(ANH: End Ceremony Leia Hair: Height of Leia’s Bun, Top of Head to Top of Ear)

DIY Leia’s End Ceremony Hair:

This hair style will need hair help, for shoulder length and long hair two packages of synthetic braiding hair can be used to achieve this look.

It is important to note that often the techniques used in the tutorials for Star Wars hair are good, however, often times the proportion are wrong for movie accurate hair.

Version – 1:

Put your hair into a ponytail on the crown of your head; add some synthetic braiding hair into the ponytail and braid. All of Leia’s braids are think and the width if even all the way through, the 82” synthetic hair might work better for adding the right length to the braid down the back. Make or buy a clip on bun, make it by taking two hair daunts and sewing or gluing them one on top of the other. Cover your clip on bun with the hair and stitch the three braids around the hiding the ends inside the clip on bun. Once finished, clip the bun over the top of your long braid that hangs down your back and you’re all done.  If you’re using a wig then putting the hair into a long braid and adding a clip on bun would work well, for security it’s recommend sewing instead of gluing the when attaching the built items in this style.

Version – 2:

Follow the steps in the video tutorial above, however, the style needs tweaking, the hair is not long enough so make sure to use the right length of hair to achieve the look. It might be a good idea to use the 82” synthetic hair, or, if you have short hair and can’t make as large of a bun braid only half of a bundle of synthetic hair, use the unbraided half to make your bun larger and then wrap t he braided half around to make the first of three braids. To make the braid that hangs down the back, use a separate bundle of synthetic hair that is the right length and pin it to the bun before wrapping the three braids around the bun.

Another video tutorial, has a similar technique the the tutorial above, and like the above mentioned style needs adjusted to be movie accurate. However, the technique has helpful methods.

Version – 3:

Follow the steps of the video tutorial above, only make sure to smooth out the hair, and to get the right volume and length consider adding in a second bundle of synthetic braiding hair. One for the braid that hangs down Leia’s back, and another bundle to split into three and wrap around the bun.

Notes:

Remember that in all of these ways of making this hair style, a hair net should be placed over the bun. The hair should also be smooth as possible and try and keep the volume and length as close to movie accurate as possible.

Items Needed For This Style:

The Force Awaken: Ray’s Tri-Buns Hairstyle

Ray’s tri-buns are simple to do, like with all Star wars hairstyles, following proportion is the best way to get a movie accurate look. Many tutorials, though perfectly accurate in method, have their proportions off, with studying and following the movie proportions, the methods liked at the bottom will work wonderfully for Rays tri-buns.

Front:

A small triangle of hair it taken from the front of the hairline, roughly in width from the center of the one eye to the other, this hair is then tide with a little black hair tie and is roughly in line with her ears.

Buns:

The tri-buns are simple, the hair is sectioned into three parts and pulled back into a ponytail that is halfway pulled through the hair tie and has the end wrapped around the base.

(Note: that these buns are not all the same size and these are smaller at the top of the head and going down to the largest.)

(Also Note: that Ray’s hair, though easily done with your own natural hair, is a very stiff hair style, it doesn’t move a lot, this is likely because she has extra hair extensions in her style.)

(TFA: Ray: Tri-Buns: Buns Are Different Sizes)

(Also Note: that that the buns should not touch each other when finished, and that it will be easier to achieve this style is your hair is between shoulder length and mid back.)

Mini-Bun:

The first bun is a mini-bun, the hair is pulled from the front of the ears up to the crown of the head and put into the first tri-bun. the Mini-bun loop is roughly in line with Ray’s hair line.

Small-Bun:

The second bun is a Small-Bun; the hair is pulled back from the base of the skull in line with the jaw. The top of the small-bun is diagonally from the top of the ear a straight line, all this hair is up into a slightly larger bun then the first making a small-bun. The small-bun’s loop is roughly in line with the upper to middle part of the ear.

Medium-Bun:

The last bun is the largest and is a medium sized bun; the remaining hair is put into a medium-bun. (Note: that none of the buns touch each other,) the medium-bun’s loop is roughly in line with the base of Ray’s neck close to the shoulder.

Tri-bun 8
(TFA: Ray: Tri-Buns: Height Of Buns)

Ear Curls:

In front of the ears there are small sections of hair left out and slightly curled, these hairs are left out from the hair style and finish off the look. They should not be longer then her shoulder and often times appear shorter.

(TFA: Ray: Tri-Buns: Ear Curls)

Method Tips:

Ray does not have any apparent hair pins holding the hair that is wrapped around the base of her bun in place. Using a topsytail tool, after wrapping the hair around the base of the bun, pull the tail of the hair back inside the elastic, hiding it inside the bun for a seamless look.

Myths About Star Wars Hairstyles

One of the common myths about hairstyles in the Star Wars universe is that these intricate styles are achieved with a person’s own natural (often times long and thick) hair. In reality a combination of wigs, hair pieces and hair extensions, among other techniques, where used to give the length and volume needed for these styles. Princess Leia’s and Queen Amidala/Padmé’s hairstyles are commonly attributed to this myth. However, both Leia’s and Padmé’s hair is achieved through the for mentioned hair help. Within universe the characters achieve these hairstyles with wigs, hair filler and forms among means other than their own natural hair. In [Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Season: 3 Episode: 11, Pursuit of Peace,] a short scene near the end of the episode shows Padmé talking with her handmaiden Teckla Minnau. In the scene Teckla is holding Padmé’s senatorial wig/headdress which Padmé wears with her (blue and gold) senate dress from the Clone Wars TV show.

A behind the scene photo of Padmé’s [Star Wars: The Phantom Menace] (black Coruscant) wig/headdress from [Padawan’s Guide] shows that the wearers real hair is tucked beneath the wig/headdress.

Padmé’s (senate address) headdress from the same movie can also be seen here in makeup-chair, (Also from Padawan’s Guide).

All in all, the notion that Star Wars hairstyles can and only should be achieved by your own natural hair is a myth in our galaxy and one far, far away.

Princess Leia Cinnamon Buns Hairstyle: A New Hope.

Leia’s Cinnamon Buns:

Leia’s Buns Debunked:

The hair in Star Wars is some of the most fantastic hair in Sci-Fi, possibly the most famous hairstyle is Princess Leia’s classic cinnamon buns from Episode IV A Hew Hope. A common myth about these buns, (as well as most of the hairstyles in Star Wars) is that they are achieved with Leia’s own naturally long hair. This of course if a myth, (Carrie Fisher) had short hair while filming Star Wars, Leia’s buns are most likely achieved through hair extensions. The volume and length required for Leia’s buns are almost impossible to achieve without hair extension.

Breakdown of Leia’s Buns:

A breakdown of Leia’s cinnamon buns reveals that they are not likely to be a wig or a hair piece. The shape and placement of Leia’s buns change almost every scene, although only slightly, and the hair can be seen coming unraveled after action scenes. Also note that the hair of Leia’s buns are slightly different color then (Carrie Fisher’s). The shapes of the buns also change from very round, to slightly oval throughout the movie.

When the buns are more oval this is because the tail of the bun is starting to come out from behind the other coils. Or sometimes it has been pinned in that shape instead of a round shape. Leia’s buns are twisted and coiled in one layer into a large bun that is shaped like a snail’s shell (fallow the numbers from 1 outwards.) Leia’s buns covers the entire ear and almost none of the check.

Leia’s buns are also pined flat against her head; there is no space between the hair and the side of her head.

leia-bun-position-5
(bun height and placement)

The placement of Leia’s buns as seen in the images above have the top edge of the bun come to about an inch above Leia’s temple. The lower edge of Leia’s bun comes down to about the bottom on her lower lip, (though this changes slightly throughout A New Hope, depending on the scene). The center of Leia’s buns starts roughly around eye height and behind the shell of her ear.

The part of Leia’s hair goes from the center (or very slightly off center) to the base of her neck in one strait line. (Note: that all of these aspects of Leia’s buns will change slightly from person to person.)

(Methods That Should Not Be Used For Movie Accurate Buns:)

  • Sock buns,
  • Doughnut buns,
  • Rolled buns,
  • Buns on the back of the head,
  • Buns that are above or behind the ears,
  • Braided buns/braided hair,
  • Buns that cover the cheeks,
  • Buns that have multiple coiled layers,
  • Hair with visible bangs,
  • Hair that is parted on the side (or other then center),
  • Buns that have not been twisted before coiling,
  • Buns that are not smooth.

(Note: that all of the above mentioned don’t method for Leia’s buns are specifically for  making movie accurate buns, and are all fine methods for Leia inspired buns.)

DIY Application of Leia’s Buns:

To achieve Leia’s buns there are many methods, (Kayley Melissa’s) video tutorial shows one of the best ways to achieve Leia’s buns in a movie accurate style.

Tips When Using Kayley Melissa’s Method:

Before putting the natural hair into an elastic tie use hair spray from 10” away to coat the hair and brush through, this will keep the hair smoother with less frizzing. (Note: that all hairspray should be used from a distance of about 10” for best results when a little flexibility is desired.) (Also Note: that hairspray should not be used on the synthetic hair.)

The kind of pins that should be used in this style are large hair pins, there are a lot of pins for hair out there but large hair pins will work the best. When the buns are pined in place use bobby pins to tuck any stray hair that might need it, (this may happen more with shorter hair). Then add a hair nets over the top of the buns to finish the look.

(Note: that Kanekalon hair tangles easily when loosed from the ties and packaging and should be handled with care.)

(Note: Kanekalon hair tangles easily when combed, if the hair needs untangled, gently finger comb until more smooth.)

Things You’ll Need For Leia’s Buns:

From start to finish buying every item on the list the total cost of Leia’s buns comes to around 25$. (without shipping.)
